Our climate is too difficult here for a swimming pool. The summers are too short, but if you can extend your summer by 3 to 4 months that changes the whole thing.
You may not swim in May or November but your backyard can still be an attractive vacation spot with the sound of running waterfalls. They will help to relax you and block out the surrounding neighbourhood sounds as you sit beside your pool and meditate in your own vacation spot.
I garantee you, the first thing that you do when you jump into the pool on a hot summers' day, is to swim to the waterfall and get under that "shower" of water. Take a look:
